posting this up for all people who end up having similar troubles:

this is for a 1995 chev s10

last night, my 4wd failed me. i took it to the shop this morning, and they told me the proper fix is probably $570 for the part, not counting the labor to install it, but... i paid $104. they diagnosed it. the encoder motor which tells the transfer case which gear to be in failed 25% of the time in a given interval, so it quit working. they cleared the fail code, and it works now until it fails 25% of the time in the same interval. to clear the code, you pull the tail light fuse with the key off. yes. the tail light fuse. 2 and a half minutes later, if you plug the fuse back in, the 4wd codes will be cleared and you can try again.

it looks to be 2 hours or so labor, for me, and $210 if I order the part through summitracing.com

so, the moral of the story is, just because you don't know how to diagnose a problem doesn't mean that you have to pay the shop to fix the problem. also, if a shop gives you a price quote of 570$, double check it elsewhere.

The encoder motors are the most common failure on GM transfer cases. Had to change out the one on my '95 Blazer and my '98 Tahoe.
